Lowering your Electricity Bill

Saving energy is about more than simply saving money on your electric bill. Lowering your energy consumption can also reduce your impact on the environment as a whole

Saving energy also doesn't have to be hard. Making even a few small changes around your home can potentially result in big financial savings. Below are a few tips on ways you can get started.

Energy Savings Tips

Get an energy audit

Determining the energy efficiency of your home is the first step toward understanding what you need to do to fix the places where your home is leaking energy. Perhaps your windows need caulking or maybe your heating and cooling equipment is antiquated and needs replacing. Your older home may have less insulation than is ideal.

All this and more can be determined by having a certified professional visit your home and perform an energy audit.

Lower your thermostat

Heating and cooling account for about 56% of the energy use in a typical home, making it the largest energy expense, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The location of your home’s thermostat can also affect its performance and efficiency. Read the manufacturer’s installation instructions to prevent “ghost readings” or unnecessary furnace or air conditioner cycling. Place thermostats away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, skylights, and windows.

Install a smart thermostat that you can schedule and program remotely. Keep the heat or air conditioning to a minimum when you’re away and only turn it up shortly before you return home from your smartphone. Home automation with Constellation Connect and smart thermostats can help make your home more energy efficient.

Other ways to save energy

  • Unplug or turn off unused appliances: Items such as televisions, laptops, and phones are still using energy even if you are not using them. Be sure to unplug or turn off these items when they are not in use and start saving on your electric bill.
  • Tightly close windows and doors: Make sure heat is not escaping through spaces around your window and doors.
  • Use the sun to your advantage: During the winter let sunlight come in through your windows. This will help heat your house naturally.
  • Turn off lights: When you are not at home or leave a room be sure to turn off the lights. It’s a simple tip but it can help you save. Smart home automation with Constellation Connect and smart light bulbs can make it easy to schedule and control lighting whether you’re home or away.
  • Limit opening outside doors: The more you go in and out of your home, the more your cooling and heating systems have to work. Limit your trips and save energy in the process.
  • Choose energy efficient appliances with ENERGY STAR qualification. These appliances use advanced technologies to ensure anywhere from 10 to 50 percent less energy usage than standard appliances.
  • Unblock air vents: Move furniture or other items so they are not blocking your home’s air vents.
  • Clean or replace your air filter: Having a dirty air conditioning filter will make your system work harder to keep your house cool. Keep the filter clean and lower your energy usage.
  • Air dry clothing: If you have the time, let your clothes dry on a laundry rack or clothesline instead of using a dryer.
